September 24, 2012: Congratulations, KC!!! (And Tom Berenger)

I have to admit to some mild surprise when Kevin Costner's name was read last night as the winner of the Emmy for best lead actor in a miniseries or movie. Predictions had been talking up Benedict Cumberbatch, who does excellent work as "Sherlock" (although one has to wonder why "Sherlock," actually in its second season, was in the movie/miniseries category).

And KC's work as Devil Anse was subtle - the opposite of the flamboyant work as Uncle Jim Vance that got Tom Berenger his Emmy for best supporting actor.

Subtle and terrific, Kevin Costner quietly anchored that miniseries - in plot, in character and, one suspects, behind the scenes. Emmy voters saw that, and here's a tip of the cap to them.

Finally, a man who has quietly become one of the steadiest, most reliable actors in Hollywood has been recognized for it.

Congratulations, Kevin. You've earned it.
